HONDOO GUIDED ADVENTURE TRIPS
Hondoo outfits small group, wilderness trips providing guests the
opportunity to experience southeastern Utah's picturesque backcountry. We get
participants away from the crowds into remote and seldom visited locations.
Trips are lead by professionals for who guiding is not simply a
sideline. Our equipment is well maintained by outdoorsmen who take pride in
their rigs. Our cooks offer wholesome meals that lead toward southwestern style
cooking; special diets are gladly accommodated.
Hondoo conducts both scheduled and chartered trips.
Scheduled Trips feature deluxe provisions and complete
outfitting. We strive to provide the highest level of comfort while practicing
low impact, not primitive camping. Don't misunderstand us - we are not a white
glove, tuck you into bed outfit. We do provide camp chairs, primitive shower,
sleeping cot or 6' pad, tent, fresh food, iced drinks, etc...to make the trip
more pleasant and restful.
Chartered Trips have always been Hondoo's
specialty. Outings for the individual, families or groups and catering for
workshops or outdoor activities are welcome. Charter trips are not restricted
to particular dates and level of service may range from basic to complete.
Bookings for charter trips should be arranged well in advance.
Indian Rock Art Seminars & Canyon Country
Tours
Our focus is the wealth of rock art located in remote and seldom
visited sections of the Colorado Plateau, west and north of the Colorado
River.
These scheduled tours are an out-grouwth of Pat's and Gary's long time
fascination with rock art and the growing public awaremess of a part of north
America's forgotton past. The trips cultivate an appreciation for the legacy of
Native Americans.
Wildlife Expeditions
These expeditions are designed for animal enthusiasts who want to sight
and photograph canyon country critters. Our focus is large mammals, but other
wildlife and the colorful canyon country landscape are equally alluring. A
naturalist leads each trip.
- Wild Horse Expeditions - to the San Rafael Swell, April &
October.
Today, three herds of horses and a band of burros run free.
- Elk Expedition - to Utah's High Plateaus, June.
Late June
finds the elk population segregated by sex. All but a few juvenile bulls have
left the cows to rake the velvet from their antlers. We will center our
attention primarily on the herds of cows and valves.
- Buffalo Expeditions - to the Henry Mountains, July 21-26.
Only a handful of free roaming bison herds exist anywhere on earth. These
great, shaggy bovines which once wandered by the millions influenced the life
styles of entire cultures are now one of North America's rarest large mamals.
To view them anywhere is exciting and to sight them amidst a canyon country
backdrop is truly spectacular.
- Bighorn Sheep Expedition - to the Canyonlands, May 4-9 &
September 3-8.
Regarded as the canyon country's most majestic large mamal,
the bighorn is coming back strong after being nearly wiped out by disease
during the previous century. To get in a position to view is time consuming but
the rewards are great. This expedition is always a favorite for guides and
guests alike.

Annual Trailrides
The rides
explore many of the physiographic sections or landforms located in the Colorado
Plateau west of the Colorado River and the Green River.
The rides are open to novice through advanced riders, aleit these
are not trips for persons riding their first time. Trail conditions range from
good to rugged, over rough and rocky terrain. Distance covered between camps
usually range from 6 to 12 miles (3 to 6 hours in the saddle) although longer
or shorter days do occur. We sometimes divide the group and approach camp from
different trails, with one group going the rugged or longer route and the other
taking the gentler way. Side rides from camp are customary on short days. Stops
at scenic features and Indian rock art panels are common. Geology and history
are emphasized. You may use your personal horse.
