OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS What is the best time to come? Temperatures and precipitation vary widely with elevation and season. With elevations ranging from 3750' to over 11,500', life zones range from upper-Sonoran at Lake Powell to Alpine on the High Plateaus. The slickrock deserts of the low-country are the setting for spring and fall trips; higher ecosystems are the locale for summer outings. What about pre and/or post-trip lodging? Hondoo provides pre-trip lodging on scheduled tours. Do the trips have age requirements? Hondoo has no ironclad age requirement for any trip. What is the trip size limit? Scheduled trips are limited to 10 guests. Charter rides are limited to 15 persons. A minimum of 3 fares is needed for daily tours. How far do we travel each day? Horse riders and hikers normally cover 6 to 12 miles depending upon the trip and the itinerary. Distances covered on daily vehicle and hiking tours will be determined by destination and your desire. What level of ability is required? We have long believed that a love the outdoors is more fundamental to trip enjoyment than ability. We encourage all participants to sharpen their skills prior to the trip. Trailrides are open to novice thru advanced horseman. This doesn't mean the rides are open to people who have never ridden before. It means we are prepared to offer instruction and show patience with greenhorns. |

San Rafael Swell Wilderness DATES: April 21-26, 28-May 3May 4-9, 2001 COST: $925 10% discount if reserved before April 1size=5> TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:View free roaming mustangs and big horn sheep The Swell is situated along the Old Spanish Trail which served as a conduit for trade in horses until about 1850. It has long been known for its inaccessibility and rugged landscape. Consequently, from the period when outlaws roamed horseback through much of the sparsely settled Colorado Plateau, the Swell was a favorite hiding spot. The Swell is poised for protection under the San Rafael Conservation Legacy bill currently before Congress. The Swasey brothers were the first Anglos to explore the Swell in detail and settle in Castle Valley. The Swell was bisected at great expense by Interstate 70 in 1967. LBJ was trying to spend us into greatness much to the chagrin of a few cattlemen and lovers of the Swell who wanted to see I-70 by-pass it by going along the natural and less expensive route, the Old Spanish Trail. Sightings of wild horses and desert bighorn sheep should be expected. Wildlife is abundant around the water sources. Hondoo Country: This ride covers the southern Swell from I-70 along the San Rafael Reef to the gorge where the Muddy River emerges thru the Chute. Red Canyon, the Penitentiary, Hebe's Canyon and the Chimney are among the highlights. Numerous outstanding Indian rock art panels will be seen. Sids Mt. Country: This ride covers the northern Swell from I-70 to the San Rafael River. Taking a circular route, we will cross the drainages of Cold Wash, Mesquite Canyon, McCarty Canyon, Saddle Horse Canyon and Caine Wash emerging from this slickrock wilderness near our starting point at the Head of Sinbad. |
